The Indian Planning Commission is planning a growth in the (much needed) electricity supply 5 times by 2031-32. But the policy maintains a dependence on Coal. This does not make sense at a time -

- When we face a Climate Emergency and the entire life on earth is at threat - Coal has been the biggest contributor for it.

- India only has very poor quality coal reserves left for 40 years, whereas the approximate life of a coal plant is about 50 years.

- Coal has massive social costs, it is already killing upto 170,000 people annually - and sucks up critical resources of land, water etc.

This decision will leave a mess for future generations to deal with. So why new Coal, when we have solutions that exist.

To question our reliance on fossil fuel, highlight the solutions and prove this seemingly impossible – possible. We are riding to Delhi from Kolkata -1500 kms with the above message (because the solutions already exist, only the will has to be mobilized). We want 1500 messages signed in support.
